We saw the trailer last year when we were at the movies and eagerly anticipated its release in the UK. It didn’t make it to the cinema, went straight to tv. The Internet Movie Database gave it 6 points or so out of 10, putting it just over average. This film is anything but average, and should have as much exposure as possible. How can you rate something that is to do with our survival as a species? It’s not a point of discussion  like ‘is tea bad for you’. Scientific research and physical changes in nature occuring at an unprecedented rate  show WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING! The advert breaks during the film which we usually watch and think little of, served to highlight the very thing that got us into the mess we are in today. Chemical weed killer, Australia’s best airline, the latest McDonald’s burger…Watch this film, it’s so important, and against all the odds, hopeful.

I was very exited to learn about the future prospects for genetic engineering, mostly because Venter is so adamant that it can solve the whole global warming problem.

Venter is currently designing the genetics of an organism that can convert sewage into methane gas to be used as a fuel. If successful, this 100% sustainable methane could be used to replace fossil fuels as mankind’s primary source of energy.

This is a completely new concept for me – it was the first time I had ever heard of this idea. Initially, I started to wonder how controllable this organism will be. What would happen if it found it’s way out of the environment and started releasing methane in vast quantities into the atmosphere? After all, methane is a much more harmful greenhouse gas than CO2.

The counter argument may be that the organism would be given a short lifespan so that it would naturally die out after a few days or weeks. The problem with this argument is that the organism may mutate from its safe form into a dangerous uncontrollable one.

Perhaps it could be completely shielded from background radiation (which causes mutations). However, this may make the whole idea too expensive or impractical.
